September 2009 - Autumn approaches |
|
Some changeable weather and the sound of red deer stags roaring in the glens tells us that autumn is well and truly here. Towards the end of the month the stags were beginning to break out of their male herds and starting to hold hinds.
Also a sign of the autumn has been the sight and sound of geese flying in high over Alladale on the way south from their northern breeding grounds.
Again good numbers of ptarmigan have been seen with twenty three seen in a short space of time in one particular spot. Golden eagles have also been very visible with four together on one occasion, and a spectacular display from another as it repeatedly dive-bombed a peregrine falcon.
Most amusing incident of the month though was when a juvenile peregrine came to within a few feet of us when we were sitting high up in the hills, circled back round again and seemed to think that the Ranger's hat would make a nice meal!
