November 2009 - Migration begins

Early in November we witnessed the sight of  many thousands of migrating fieldfares and redwings passing through Alladale. Flocks of several hundred were not an uncommon sight.

Woodcock have returned for the winter and many have been seen on the roads and tracks leading to Alladale early in the morning.

Black grouse have also been seen on at least two occasions and they seem to be expanding their range which is great news.

I personally had the privilege of seeing a young golden eagle fly to just a few feet above a red deer stag, the stag flashing its antlers at the eagle and then deciding to turn and run from the eagle. A great day bird surveying was completed by finding the first snow buntings of the winter feeding amongst the scree at the very highest point on the estate.

Preparation for some major tree planting schemes has included the completion of wildlife surveys by third party experts. A healthy water vole population has been discovered and their colonies have now been marked off to prevent any disturbance during the tree planting process.
