May 2010 - Velvetine Deer
One final fall of hill snow at the end of May finally heralded the end of the bad weather - we hope!

The red deer stags are now in velvet and quickly developing their new antlers. At the same time they are losing their winter coat and coming into their reddish summer coat which gives them their name.

More of the summer migratory birds have been seen on the reserve including redstart, merlin and spotted flycatcher. House martins also arrived back in May and have been busy building their nests.

Cuckoos are here, and in the surrounding area, in good numbers. This is in contrast apparently to the southern parts of Britain where it is believed that smaller numbers of meadow pipits may be encouraging cuckoos to move futher north. Meadow pipits are one of the cuckoos favourite "hosts" in terms of nests to lay their eggs in.

Finally two new kind of birds have been recorded on the reserve. A pair of collared doves have taken up residence around the lodge and twite have also been seen in the glen.
