March 2010 - A spring in the wagtails' step

Never before has the sight of a common pied wagtail been such a welcome sight!

One feeding around the Lodge was a sign that spring is finally arriving.

The snow has gone at ground level, temperatures have climbed and the first of the primroses have bloomed. A few meadow pipits have also returned to Alladale and April will see the return of many more summer migrants. Pools and ditches have also been alive with spawning frogs and teal, mallard and oystercathers are very much in evidence along the rivers.

The highlight of the month for me was a great view of a male hen harrier quartering over moorland, plunging to catch some prey (presumably a vole at this time of year) and then moving off to hunt again after eating its meal.
