February 2010 - An inkling of starlings
February was a month dominated by bad weather with extremely low temperatures and very heavy snowfall. Large parts of the reserve have been inaccessible due to severe snow drifts.

The snow has however provided evidence of the mammals that have been battling through these difficult conditions with otter, fox and mountain hare tracks on the high ground and along the burns.

A brief respite in the weather saw the return of some starlings to the lodge area as they prospected for the best nest sites. However a further heavy snowfall moved them off again and we await their return along with the other spring arrivals.

A tawny owl calling at night around the lodge has been one of the few other birds in evidence and the pair of whooper swans and their cygnet remained on the Glen Mhor river for at least two weeks
