August 2009 - The return of the midge
On the high ground in August we have seen several good coveys of ptarmigan which seems to indicate that they have had a relatively good breeding season. Also apparent have been some good numbers of red grouse. Two new species of bird have been added to the Alladale list this summer.
Firstly a dunlin was seen in full breeding plumage on the high tops in the same area preferred by breeding golden plover and ptarmigan.

Secondly reed buntings have bred successfully in one of the regeneration zones. We hope that this is a good indication that the increasing tree cover here is attracting birds back.

Roe deer are expanding their range up into Glen Alladale and the red deer stags have now lost their velvet.

Finally the midges have been trying to make friends with all the outside staff this month. Roll on the first frost of the year!
