April 2010: Next follows swallows...
More snow in mid April meant that winter's grip held on longer than was expected. However many of the summer migrants have returned to the reserve with wheatears, meadow pipits, sand martins and common sandpipers much in evidence.

March 2010 - A spring in the wagtails' step

Never before has the sight of a common pied wagtail been such a welcome sight!

One feeding around the Lodge was a sign that spring is finally arriving.

February 2010 - An inkling of starlings
February was a month dominated by bad weather with extremely low temperatures and very heavy snowfall. Large parts of the reserve have been inaccessible due to severe snow drifts.

January 2010 - A winter's tale
Temperatures plummeted to minus 18 degrees centigrade during the prolonged cold snap and snow and ice made it extremely difficult to get around anywhere on the reserve.

December 2009 - Snow and otters?!
The highlight of this month was certainly the sight of four otters along one of our main rivers. Otters are not often seen at Alladale although there is a healthy local population.

November 2009 - Migration begins

Early in November we witnessed the sight of  many thousands of migrating fieldfares and redwings passing through Alladale. Flocks of several hundred were not an uncommon sight.

September 2009 - Autumn approaches
Some changeable weather and the sound of red deer stags roaring in the glens tells us that autumn is well and truly here. Towards the end of the month the stags were beginning to break out of their male herds and starting to hold hinds.

August 2009 - The return of the midge
On the high ground in August we have seen several good coveys of ptarmigan which seems to indicate that they have had a relatively good breeding season. Also apparent have been some good numbers of red grouse. Two new species of bird have been added to the Alladale list this summer.

July 2009 - Birds galore
July was the month to see many of our breeding birds with their youngsters. Without any doubt the highlight was the successful fledging of a golden eagle chick. Some of us were very fortunate to witness what we believe was it's maiden flight.  The adult birds have had several barren years so this success was real cause for celebration.

June 2009 - Bothies and Wildlife

June has seen the completion of our two, stone-built bothies set in the heart of Glen Alladale. The bothies (highland cottages) are in keeping with the eco traits which the reserve is renowned for, by ensuring all electricity within the cottages is run off their newly installed hydro electric system.
