Our collaboration with WildCRU has taken a further step forward with Chris Sandom successfully obtaining a place at WildCRU to carryout the research as a Phd. Chris has been leading the Volunteer Programme at Alladale for the last 2 years and will now head-up the research. An exciting plan has been put together that will primarily determine the 'best practice' of reintroducing European Bison and Scottish Wildcats.
Five experiments have been designed to produce a model of best practice that could be used across a typical Highland landscape. The first experiment will determine how a population of Wild Boar respond to the Scottish Highlands environment. It is essential to recognise how these animals will behave. Our recently completed 500 acre enclosure contains 4 primary habitat types and it is not known how the Boar will use, or what effect they will have on, these different habitats. Spring 2007 will see 15 Wild Boar, each wearing a GPS collar, released into the enclosure. The GPS collars will then record the boar's position on an hourly basis, providing valuable data on the usage of each habitat type and how they interact socially. This will be combined with behavioural studies that will provide a fascinating baseline study from which the other 4 studies will develop. The Wild Boar will also be sharing the enclosure with other large herbivores including Red & Roe Deer and the European Elk which provides a unique opportunity to observe how these species interact. Further experiments will investigate the importance of Wild Boar stocking density, the use of feed, tick populations and the wider social, economic and environmental implications of using Wild Boar in this system. This page will keep you up to date on how the research is progressing. If you wish to enquire further about the research or make a charitable donation to the project, please contact Chris Sandom at
