Red Squirrel re-introduction |
|
In 2007, and in collaboration with our neighbouring estates, we hope to begin the process of establishing a new population of Red Squirrels in Amat forest, a remnant of the Caledonian Pine Forest, that immediately borders Alladale. It is an exciting programme that will require careful preparation and establishment to be successful and the staff at Alladale staff are keen to get started! |

There are few species in Scotland that can compete with the popularity of the red squirrel. There are also few that are as well known as a result of their dramatic decline in recent years. It is well documented that the introduced American grey squirrel is largely responsible for the demise of these beautiful animals. There is considerable debate over finding solutions to reintroduce red squirrels on a national scale, but action is required now to preserve the species.
Alladale and neighbouring estates is fortunate not to have any populations of grey squirrels but unfortunately, we have no red squirrels either. The species became locally extinct due to other factors not related to the grey squirrel, such as habitat loss and persecution. There have been considerable regeneration projects in the area and there is no longer a fear that the squirrels would be persecuted. It is now appropriate to look at possible re-introduction programmes in areas where grey squirrels are not present and where they are not likely to re-establish in the near future.
