Restoring Nature's Balance

The Highlands are considered one of Europe's last great areas of wilderness, yet much of the flora and fauna that once thrived here has been driven to extinction by the activities of man.

The purpose of the Alladale Wilderness Reserve is to restore a remote area of the Highlands to its former natural glory.

At Alladale you will meet some of the lost species we have returned, and your stay will contribute directly to this pioneering conservation project.

Osprey Nest

The success of the Osprey since its return to Scotland has been remarkable. It continues to expand its territory with more birds nesting in Scotland every year. Sightings on Alladale have become far more common in recent years, with some unusual sightings occurring with birds landing on open ground. We currently do not have established nest sites at Alladale, however, in the spring of 2007 we will build artificial nest sites to encourage nesting. Osprey typically nest in trees in open woodland located not far from a good source of fish. They are impressive fishermen and we are convinced that they will make the most of Alladale’s rivers and lochs.  Hopefully, it won't be long before visitors will be able to see these magnificent birds swooping in to pluck a fish from the water to provide for their young - another spectacle that can be enjoyed by all visiting the Alladale Wilderness Reserve.
