Dear Friends,

Welcome to our newsletter, the purpose of which is to bring you up to date with some of the interesting developments that are happening on the Reserve and in the Lodge.

We also have a new feature this issue - Kenny's Recipe of the Month! - Kenny is our resident top chef and each issue will be giving up some of his tasty kitchen secrets, so be sure to check them out.

School Trips

As part of a joint initiative between The Lister Charitable Trust and The Challenger Trust we have just completed our first trial ‘outward bound’ school trips for local students.

Two schools participated in the first two expeditions. During their stay, the 12-14 year olds learnt about the importance of teamwork, communication and leadership skills whilst gaining knowledge of the Highland Ecosystem and Natural History in a remote and wild location.

They also learnt to cook, wild camp, plant trees and many other skills. In 2008 we will host over 150 children for a five night stay. We hope this model, in time, can be replicated throughout scotland.

“the Alladale project has proven to be a success with world challenge staff, teaching staff and especially the challengers. Both management teams have worked well together to produce an exciting programme and also a fun week for the challengers”.

Wild Boar Piglets

As you can see from this image, some of our female boar have now given birth and in the process, many have united in family groups!

We are especially excited about this development and the prospect for the research work we are undertaking with Oxford University's wildlife research division, WildCRU (www.wildcru.org). If you are interested in learning more about this programme, please contact Chris Sandom directly.

Deer Calf Tagging

Our red deer hinds have now begun calving, much later than usual. Alladale’s rangers tag several of these infants for future identification purposes so we can check on the range of individuals. Those readers wishing to assist in this unforgettable experience should consider making a booking for next June. ^ TOP

BBC trip to Sweden

David Clark (Alladale ranger) and I recently travelled to Sweden as part of the BBC series on Alladale.

Our objective over the week was to explore various wilderness areas and to interview people involved with Swedish wildlife and conservation.

The film crew also worked hard to locate Sweden’s elusive forest animals such as bear, moose, wolverine and capercaillie.

During our first night, in mid May, we were exposed to temperatures well below freezing with a blanket of snow the following morning!

By the end of the trip we had experienced several personal ‘firsts’ from eating live forest ants to observing wild bears just a few hours drive from Stockholm.

Highland Wedding

June has seen our first wedding at Alladale! Surrounded by their families and friends, the happy couple wed with the ancient remnants of the northernmost Caledonian pinewood in Britain as the dramatic backdrop. After the ceremony the couple and their party were whisked round the Reserve by helicopter to enjoy a bird’s eye view of the whole estate. With photographer on board, they were dropped on top of one of our highest peaks at nearly 3,000 feet for some very dramatic shots!

The staff at Alladale were delighted to be involved in the planning of such a memorable occasion and we hope many more will follow! ^ TOP

It was with great delight that we welcomed Jessica Richards back again to the inspirational surroundings of Alladale in May 2007, where she facilitated another of her renowned ‘Visions and Legacies’ Retreats; doing what she does best – assisting personal transformation.

Jessica worked together with her co-facilitator Joanna Jesson, to provide a unique experience for a small group of 7 like-minded business leaders. Jessica’s unique Retreat experience provided the participants with the opportunity to discover their fullest potential and their ultimate legacy to the world. They also learnt what they needed to do to implement and move forward with their legacies immediately.

On leaving Alladale one delegate said “I have had a fantastic time here at Alladale; with the insight I have received during the last few days I am now ready to take my life’s work forward with renewed vigour, vision and clarity of purpose and I have defined my practical action plans too”.

After the event, Joanna told us “Jessica and I will definitely be back at Alladale next year for our Visions and Legacies Retreat – the unique service offering here is just what we need; we find it is the perfect place to combine our work on life’s purpose and meaning whilst also making a contribution to Paul’s own legacy here at Alladale - getting involved in some of his projects too.”

Author Richard Dawkins and the YPO

World renowned author Richard Dawkins visited Alladale last week as guest speaker for the Young Presidents Organisation who were holding their first retreat in Scotland.

The YPO members arrived at Alladale from Switzerland, the US and London. Four days of intensive discussions and a memorable address from Professor Dawkins was complimented by a lively activities programme out on the reserve.

Kenny's Recipe of the Month - Kenny's Pound Cake

Oven Temp: 300/150/Gas 2

Ingredients:
1lb Butter; 1lb Dark Brown Sugar; ½ Pint Whisky 1lb Raisins; 1lb Currants; 1lb Sultanas; 8 0z Walnuts 8oz Glace Cherries; 1lb Wholemeal Flour; ½ Tsp Salt 1 Tsp Baking Powder; 2 Tsps Cinnamon; 1 Tsp Mixed Spice; 1 Tsp Nutmeg; 6 Eggs

Method:
Soak the fruits and cherries overnight in the whisky then cream the butter and sugar; add the fruit and nuts then separate the eggs; add the egg yolks to the mixture one by one Add the sifted flour and the salt and baking powder; now add the whisky; now fold in the egg whites. If the mixture is too dry add some more whisky. Turn into one large or 2 x 8 inch greased and lined cake tins.

Bake for one hour, turn out when cooked and keep in an airtight tin for at least a week.
