News from Alladale April 2007

Dear Friends,

Welcome to Alladale’s April newsletter, the purpose of which is to bring you up to date with some of the interesting developments that are happening on the Reserve and in the Lodge.

Big Al at large

“Big Al”
Back in February we introduced to our female herd of boar a fine male specimen that we named Big Al. Early this summer after a three month, three week and three day gestation period we expect to have many young boars within our 500 acre enclosure. These animals are part of a scientific study that Oxford University are operating over the next three years.

The film crew on location at Alladale

Golden Eagle Chicks
Early in April our rangers and BBC film crew were joined on the reserve by Roy Dennis, one of the UK’s most renowned ornithologists. After several hours of carefully scanning Alladale’s remote rock walls, Roy with great excitement spotted a female eagle sitting on eggs. So we can continue to learn more about the ecology of these amazing birds of prey we are going to satellite radio tag one of the young chicks so its movements can be traced via our website over the months and years to come.

Innes & David observing the Spanish wildlife

BBC filming in Spain
Towards the end of March Alladale’s rangers Innes and David visited one of the most rural and remote parts of Northern Spain to see European grey wolves, deer, wild boar and many other animals including a huge variety of birdlife. The trip will feature as part of the documentary on Alladale which will be aired later this year or early next. Did you know Spain is home to over 2000 wolves?

Hugh on his trusty Eco-Rider
Sponsors
I would like to thank our most recent sponsors Barbour clothing and Hunter boots who have most generously outfitted all Alladale staff with smart clothing and footwear. Orvis have equipped us with the latest ‘state of the art’ fly fishing tackle for our guests to use on our two rivers and 10 hill lochs. We have also been loaned an amazing diesel powered all terrain ‘Eco-Rider’ which has come in real handy for our GM Hugh Fullerton-Smith! We are equally appreciative of the continued support from Landrover for the 5 vehicles used daily on the reserve.

Finally, for all your tailor made enquiries please contact Isla Fullerton-Smith on +44 (0)1863 755338 or This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it '; document.write( '' ); document.write( addy_text43717 ); document.write( '<\/a>' ); //-->\n This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
