During May and June each year, there is an opportunity to go out on the Reserve with our rangers and tag selected new-born calves as part of our long-term management plan.

This practice is carried out to the highest standards of welfare and every care is taken not to upset either mother or calf during this very special exercise.

Red deer hinds "plant" (hide) their calves in a sheltered area for several hours while they graze in the early mornings and evenings.  Creeping up very quietly, the ranger carefully restrains the calf in a 'landing net,' which avoids any chance of injury and applies a small tag for future reference.  This is a very rare opportunity to share an experience with a ranger who takes great pride in carrying out the task with the utmost care.
